Abidjan, Ivory Coast - Crowds of demonstrators, said to have been mostly youths and women, blocked roads with burning tire barricades in two days of violent protests against rising food prices. The government responded by cutting taxes on imported food staples. NGOs have commented on the increasing amount of unrest in the global south tied to rising food prices, itself tied to the growing Western demand for biofuels.

Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland - Two of the ten escapees from a juvenile prison are still free as fugitives after a riot at the "escape-proof" "residential facility". During the riot fires were set, staff attacked and computers, electronic security system, and reinforced windows were smashed. £100,000 damage was reported.
