Bangladesh - Student protests against the military government have spread to include slum dwellers and the exploited classes generally, who fought riot police with sticks and rocks in increasingly violent clashes in several cities. Protestors in the capital, Dhaka, burned buses, cars and at least one military vehicle. Troops have been withdrawn from Dhaka University, where the unrest started, which was the students' original demand. The 6-month old "emergency" government has also responded by indefinitely imposing curfews and school closures in six cities, and a media and communications blackout through the country.
