Beirut, Lebanon - Cops who arrived to demolish a shanty (squatted and illegally built) neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburbs, a stronghold of militant anti-government and anti-Israel rebels like Hizbullah, found their way blocked by hundreds of residents who threw stones and exchanged gunfire with police and set up burning barricades made of tires and trash. One demonstrator was killed and at least three others wounded in the clash.
