Norwich, England - Police attempted to shut down a New Years Eve rave celebration on the north side of Norwich. They tried to intercept to vans transporting sound equipment for the event but were met with resistance from revelers. Riot police with dogs engaged in a stand-off with would-be party-goers and were pelted with rocks, bottles, roof tiles from the tops of nearby homes, and snowballs. The police eventually backed off and the party continued into the early morning. Police are still looking to prosecute the events organizers. Techno rave music parties were criminalized in the mid-eighties by the Criminal Justice Act which explicitly outlawed gatherings of 100 or more people playing amplified music characterised by a "succession of repetitive beats."
