Dam protesters

Sukkur, Pakistan - Armed opponents of the controversial Kalabagh and Bhasha mega dams attacked and burned out the offices of the daily Khabroon newspaper, after it ran an ad in support of the dam developments. Additional dam construction along the Indus river would reduce the already drought ridden Sind Province in Southeastern Pakistan to a lifeless desert. Numerous dams and irrigation projects in the northern, politically powerful Punjab Province have already dried up the river to a brackish trickle, creating an ecological and agricultural crisis among their poorer neighbors to the south.
