The normally bustling streets of Lagos, Nigeria are deserted today; and shops and businesses have not opened their shutters. Tens of millions of Nigerians have decided to stay home from work in what they promise to be the first day of a general strike which will continue for three weeks. The work stoppage is in response to spiraling gas prices. Nigeria is the world’s seventh largest oil exporter and the strike is likely to disrupt oil from leaving the country. Heavily armed police have prevented unions from holding any rallies thus far.
